OUR VISION

Vision Statement

Exalting Christ, to restore, renew, and rebuild people to serve the Kingdom of God!

OUR MISSION

Our Mission Statement

Being a church that lives out the truth of the Holy Bible, sincere and consistent in prayer, effectively teaching and preaching the timeless Word of God. A community of faith called to render witness of the life, ministry, and mission of Jesus Christ our Lord.

OUR BELIEFS

Statement of Faith

The Inspiration of the Bible

We believe that the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, is the verbally inspired Word of God in the original autographs, and is the absolute and only rule and authority for faith and practice. It is the special revelation of God to man and the only basis for true Christian unity. The Word of God is supernaturally preserved in translation and the translators were used of God to give us the Word of God in the English language. It is to be used exclusively in all teaching and preaching.
II Timothy 3:16,17; II Peter 1:19-21; Matthew 5:18; Hebrews 4:12; Acts 1:16; John 10:35; 16:12,13; 17:17; Mark 12:36

The Person of God

We believe the only true and living God is the triune God, eternally existing in three persons; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. He is absolute in His attributes and glorious in His perfection. God is personal, spirit, omniscient, sovereign, perfect, immutable, eternal in being, holiness, love, wisdom, and power. We believe that God is absolutely separate and above the world as its creator, yet every where present in the world as the sustainer of all things. God is self-existent and self-revealing in His relationship with His creation.
Genesis 1:1; John 1:1-3; Matthew 28:19; Romans 1:2-4; Deuteronomy 4:35; 6:4; Ephesians 4:3-6; I Corinthians 8:6

The Person of Jesus Christ

We believe the eternal Son became flesh in the virgin birth, and that He was Deity and lived a sinless life. His death was by way of a crucifix and after He was buried He arose from the dead and ascended into Heaven. He now sits at the right hand of God as our Great High Priest, “ever living to make intercession for us”
Isaiah 7:14; I Thessalonians 4:16; Matthew 1:18; Luke 1:35; John 1:1; 14:3; I Peter 2:22; 3:18

The Person of the Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit is the person whose task is to glorify God by convicting men of sin, drawing them unto Christ, and regenerating those who believe on Him. The Holy Spirit also empowers believers for the work of the ministry. He comforts and guides them in their Christian walk. We believe the Bible repudiates the charismatic emphasis upon the experiential oriented tongues and ecumenical practices as any ministry of the Holy Spirit. We also believe that His testimony isn’t of Himself but of Jesus Christ and the redemptive truths centered in Christ.
John 14:16,17; 16:8; Ephesians 1:13,14; I Corinthians 3:16; Romans 8:9; Acts 5:3-4; I Corinthians 12:13

The Fall of Man

The Genesis account of creation is a true and historical record, revealing that all men have inherited a depraved nature and are lost sinners in need of salvation. This nature is evident early in life by willful acts of sin and disobedience. Man is a creature of his free will and must individually determine his relationship to Christ and in turn his eternal destiny. We do not subscribe to man being “irresistibly drawn” and the false doctrine of “predestination” as they relate to salvation. All men are alienated from the life and family of God, without excuse, under the righteous judgement and wrath of God, and has within himself no possible means of salvation.
Romans 3:9-19 Ephesians 2:1-3 Genesis 1:27 Isaiah 53:6 Romans 5:12-19

The Salvation of Sinners

We believe that salvation is wholly of grace and that Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation. Salvation is through the finished work of Christ on the cross and that it is the free gift of God which is neither merited, or secured through the works of man. It is received only by personal faith in Christ and His shed blood on the cross. We believe that all who will repent of sin, trusting Christ alone are saved, made perfectly righteous before God, and given the standing of sonship by the new birth into God’s family. We believe that there is no possible salvation outside of Christ and His shed blood.
John 3:3-6, 16; 10:28-29 Acts 16:31; Ephesians 2:8-10; I Timothy 2:5-6; I Peter 1:18-23; Hebrews 9:22

The Freeness of Salvation

We believe that salvation is extended to every man as a free gift of God. Jesus Christ shed His blood in order that all men might be saved but only those who respond to the work of the Holy Spirit in the presentation of the gospel will be saved. Man has done nothing and can do nothing to be saved but believe on Christ.
Romans 4:1-4; Acts 16:31; John 1:12; 3:16; 5:24; 12:46; Ephesians 2:8-10; I John 2:1-2

The Security of the Believer

We believe that once a person is saved, he is eternally saved. We believe that the blood of Christ cleanses from all sin by the substitutionary atonement of Christ. It is complete and final and the believer can never perish after trusting Christ. This gives the believer freedom to serve Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit within him. He is secure because God has taken the responsibility for his eternal destiny.
John 10:27-30; I John 2:1-2; Romans 8:31-39; I Corinthians 6:19; Hebrews 2:10; Philippians 1:6

The Doctrine of the Church

We believe the church is a body of believers that have been baptized by immersion, practicing New Testament principles, believing her doctrines, observing the ordinances of believer’s baptism and the Lord Supper, and exercising her autonomy. The officers of the church are pastor and deacons. The church is distinct from Israel in the Old Testament and Jesus Christ is the head with the pastor accountable to Christ. She alone has the authority for carrying out the Great Commission. She is independent from any other assembly and fellowship should be with other local assemblies of like faith and practice. There is no other church but a local assembly of believers.
Matthew 28:19-20 Ephesians 1:22, 23 Acts 2:41-47 Ephesians 4:11-13 I Timothy 3:1-13 I Corinthians 12:12, 13

The Doctrine of Heaven and Hell

We believe in the eternal blessedness of the saved in a literal place called Heaven and the eternal punishment of the unsaved in a literal place called the Lake of Fire. The saved go immediately to Heaven when they die and will be judged in relationship of rewards following the rapture of the church. At death, the unsaved are held in Hell until the time of the Great White Throne judgement when they will be raised in bodily form and cast into the Lake of Fire, which is their place of final and everlasting punishment.
John 5:28,29; 14:2; Luke 16:19-31; Revelation 20:14,15; 21:4; Matthew 25:46; I Corinthians 3:12-15

The Doctrine of Last Things

Prophecy in the Bible is to be taken literally. Therefore, we believe in a premillennial, pretribulational rapture of the church. The next event on God’s prophetic calendar will be the rapture of the church. This will be followed by the “seventieth week of Daniel” which is called the Tribulation. At the end of this period of seven years, the Lord Jesus will return bodily to the earth; this is called the Second Coming of Christ. He will establish a theocratic kingdom on the earth for 1000 years. Satan is bound during this time but will be released at the end of the 1000 year reign to be cast into the Lake of Fire.
I Thessalonians 4:1-5:2; II Thessalonians 2:1-12; Revelation 19:1-20:15; Daniel 9:25-27; Matthew 24:4-25:46

Church History

1928-1939

In 1928, eight members of the Second Calvary Baptist Church decided to start a new church family. The new church family was called First Mount Zion Baptist Church. The first services were held in a small house on Craven Lane. The church grew quickly into a small congregation with Rev. W. L. Heard as the first pastor.

The first deacons were Brothers Fred Culp, William Davis, Steel Moss, Siler Gray and John King was Chairman. As the membership grew, Brothers Goins Walker and James Miller were added as Deacons.

The original Trustees were Brothers Ernest Williams, Herbert Stewart, Joe Shifty, James Clark, John Stewart, Deacons Fred Culp and John King. Henry Gray was the Chairman. Other officers Treasurer and Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon Culp, Sunday school teachers were Deacon John King and Bro. William Davis. The Missionary Department and the Usher Board were established with Sisters Maggie Culp and Mable Ferguson serving as presidents. The church secretary was sister Queenie James. Later, Sister Mamie Miller and Brother Goins Walker founded the Hymn Choir.

Once established, the Church affiliated with the Friendship Association, which was later, named The Mecklenburg General Baptist Association.

Rev. W. L. Heard was called to pastor another church and Rev D. L. Riggins of Atlanta was installed as the second pastor.

Rev. E. A Stewart was installed as the third pastor. Under the leadership of Rev. Stewart the church’s vision was formally established. That vision was to build a church.

1940-1944

January 1940, a snowstorm destroyed the house on Craven Lane. The church was now faced with the task of finding a temporary place to worship until a new building could be erected. The Rev. Mrs Gill offered the Mt Zion Holiness Church on Oliver Street as a place of worship until a new sanctuary was built.

After much searching , available property was found at 1301 Burton Street. There was a small wooden house located on the property. The church voted to purchase the property for $3000.00. The pastor and men of the church donated many hours of labor converting the small 20 X 20 ft. building into a temporary worship place for the church family. Still the desire to build a sanctuary was very strong on the pastor and congregation heart.

Brothers Herbert Stewart donated land that he owned to the church. The land was adjacent to the church property. Brother Stewart made the donation in hopes of making the church’s dream a reality. Deacon Earnest Williams provided some of the financial resources and raaw materials, such as coal for heating the church.

In order to generate funds for the new sanctuary, every family was asked to daonte one weeks wages. In answer to this plea, Deacons Fred Culp and Goins Walker, Brothers Oscar Wiggins, Herbert Stewart, and John Powell were a few of the leaders in this effort. Rev Stewart donated one year of his Salary toward the realization of this goal.

For four years, the membership held fundraisers to create the money needed to purchase materials for the new sanctuary. Many hours of labor and much love was put into the construction of the new sanctuary. Finally, the Sunday arrived when the church family would enter the new sanctuary. The joy was short lived, for Rev Stewart became ill and died. Rev. T. M. Martin, an assistant to Rev. Stewart became the fourth pastor. Rev. C.N. Evans was the fifth pastor.

1945-1970

In 1945, Rev. F.G. Lowery of Rock Hill, SC was called as the sixth pastor. The membership continued to expand and more deacons were added.

The members pulled together to raise money to build a choir loft, purchase new pulpit furniture, carpet and make repairs as needed.

Through the years, as the membership grew, more deacons were added. They included Brothers Sam Pittman, Ernest Williams, Joe Hampton, Douglas Aaron, William Hughes, Thad McCleave, John Eaves, Sr., Haywood Womble, Thomas Sowell, and John Pittman.

The Gospel Choir and the Youth Choir were organized by Deacon Sam Pittman and the Musical Choir was organized by Rev Lowery and Sis. Vera Eaves. The Young Adult Missionary was started under the direction of Sister A.L. Pittman, who later became Sr. Missionary Department President.

The church would remain at 1301 Burton Street for more than 30 years before it became a victim of urban renewal. Again the church committee was sent out to seek a new location.

1971-1980

The committee discovered the Advent Christian Church building at 1515 Remount Road and a parsonage on Cowles Road were available. In early 1971, the property was purchased. In June of that year, the First Mount Zion Baptist Church had it’s first service at it’s new location. It was a joyous occasion. Under the pastorate of Rev. Lowery, the congregation grew rapidly. In 1973 the church realized it needed a larger facility.

After 32 years of dedicated service, Rev. F.G. Lowery retired in 1977. The congregation had to seek a new pastor. C. V. Owens , pastor of Suck Creek Baptist church for 22 years, was called by the church as the seventh pastor. He began his pastorate in October 1977.

The church began discussions about the prospect of building a new sanctuary and an educational building. An 8:00 am worship service was started to take care of the 11:00 am service overflow.

1981-1990

Ground breaking for the new education building was held the first Sunday in August 1981. The church was proud of it’s accomplishments. A dream was finally becoming a reality. The building was completed in June 1982.

As the church grew there was a need for more deacons. Brothers Frank Williams and Curtis Harris were added.

Sis. Frances Sowell became president of the Senior Missionary Dept. The Junior MIssionary was organized with Sis Christine McMoore as Youth Supervisor. The Church recognized a need to do more teaching and organized the Christian Education Committee. Sis Dorothy Triplett served as the first President.

During the next few years it was becoming apparent that extesive work was needed on the sabtuary. On Dec 12, 1989 an inspector from the City of Charlotte declared the sanctuary unsafe.

On the last Sunday in December 1989, the buildIng was vacated. Future worship services would be held in the Fellowship Hall beginning with thw first Sunday in 1990. In April the church named the Education Building the F.G. Lowery Building.

In February of 1990 the old Santuary was demolished. Also in 1990 a Building Committee was formed. The original members were Brothers Willie Campbell, Freddie Freeman, Deacon John Pittman, Sister Maggie Bailey, and Brother Zeb Vance was Chairman. Later Sister Claretta Adams replaced Sis Maggie Bailey and Brother William Fair was added.

Through the years additional deacons were added to the Board. They were Willie Campbell, Fred Hamilton, Steven Boyd, William Fair, Frank Howard, Willie Peake, Arger Bailey, Earl McAuley, Zeb Vance, Howard Suber, Eddie Scott, and David Williams.

1991-2005

January 1992 the Trustees recommended Mylar Church Building Systems as the new architect and builder. On April 26 1992 Mylar made a formal presentation to the church body. The Church members pledged money for a new Sanctuary. The last financial papers were signed and contruction of the new sanctuary was scheduled to start in August 1994.The groundbreaking ceremony was held in March 1994. The site work for the Sanctuary began in June with the dirt removal project.

The new sanctuary was completed in 1995. The ribbon cutting ceremony was held in September 1995. This was followed by a week of dedication services and a banquet. A souvenir booklet and photo album was complied as a reminder of this very special time. On June 6, 1996 the cornerstone ceremony was held.

During the early 90’s Sis Willie Bailey became the 2nd Christian Education chairperson. Additional programs and activities were added in the 90’s, the Nursery for small children during worship service with Lorraine Queen in charge, the Senior Citizens Day out program with Sis Louise Nelson as chairperson, The Children’s Church with Sis Judy Ware as Director, the New Members Committee which was reorganized to include orientation with Twana Sifford as chair, the fine Arts Ministry with Tammey Floyd as Chair, the hostess committee with Willie Bailey as chair, the welcome Committee with Doretha Adams as Chair, the Beautification Committee with Mattie Campbell and Alfreada Brown in charge and the Library Ministry with Evangelist Clark and Louise Nelson in charge. A Van was also purchased during this time.

In 1997 the church voted to have Rev. Robbie Clark, Rev. Benjamin Frye, Rev Steven Boyd and Rev. Nathaniel Watts as associate ministers.

In 1998 the C.V. Owens Ensemble and The Voices of Zion Choirs were organized. Also during this year the church hired an office assistant.

In November 1998 the steeple and chimes were installed and dedicated, Sis. Christine McMoore became president of the General Missionary Department, and more Deacons and Trustees were added.

In 1998 we also celebrated 70 years of service to God and the community. We called it our year of Jubilee.

2006-2014

Rev. Owens retired in 2006. On March 20, 2009 the church voted to call Rev. Jonathan E. Edwards, Sr as the eight pastor. Edwards began serving on March 29th and was installed on June 28, 2009. Edwards served from 2009 to Feb. 2015.

2015-Present

In 2015 Rev. E. Shon Hagwood was called as Interim Pastor. In February 2016, Rev E. Shon Hagwood was unanimously voted in to serve as our ninth Pastor. He was installed on May 15, 2016.
